Back office and AI automation for small businesses

Operating
minipack.com ↗

A small operator's back office, run by subject-matter experts and AI automation. The owner gets the admin days back and returns to the work the business was built on.

The story behind it

A two-van HVAC company in Maryland lost about a day a week to invoicing and scheduling. The owner was a very good technician. He had become a mediocre administrator. Demand was never the ceiling.

Why

The constraint on a small operator is not skill and not demand. It is administrative surface area. It grows faster than the business and pulls the best technician off the job.

Who

Owner-operators and small teams in trades, clinics, agencies and logistics. Anyone who cannot carry a full-time back office and should not have to.

What

A bench of subject-matter experts plus AI-assisted operations, sold as capacity rather than software. Minipack is also the delivery arm behind the Dojo.

Building

Independent sellers, packers and transporters share leads and capacity in a commons they are meant to own. The aim is for the margin on each load to stay with the people who move it.

The story behind it

Two independent operators worked the same corridor for years. One ran half-empty on the return leg. The other paid a broker a margin to find capacity already passing his dock. Neither could see the other. That gap was the broker's entire business.

Why

Independent sellers, packers and transporters pay a margin for information they could hold in common. A commons they own keeps that margin in the network.

Who

Independent operators in small freight, plus the shippers and carriers whose cooperation the network needs.

What

Operators share leads, transport data and what they know. The commons is meant to end up owned by them.

Innovation-as-a-Service · Venture-Studio-as-a-Service

Building

A team brings a thesis and leaves four weeks later with something shipped, or a clear reason to stop. One engagement at a time, on a monthly subscription.

The story behind it

An innovation team at a federal contractor spent seven months and six figures on a strategy deck. The deck was good. Nobody who would have used the thing had ever been asked. By the time it landed, the program office that commissioned it had been reorganized.

Why

Roughly 80% of what any team builds is common work. Innovation lives in the remaining 20%. Organizations do not lack ideas or budget. They lack a way to get a defensible answer before conditions change. Four weeks survives a reorganization.

Who

Enterprise and agency innovation teams, transformation programs, and funds working with their portfolio companies.

What

You pay a flat monthly rate and get one engagement at a time, with requests in a queue and the option to pause at the end of any month. Four weeks takes a thesis to something shipped, on the Builder's Playbook.

Caravan

Caravan

Ethical private equity marketplace

Operating
caravanfunds.com ↗

Community investors put money into operating businesses and real estate near them, on terms published before anyone commits. Offerings run through Caravan Funds Portal, LLC, a funding portal registered with the SEC and a member of FINRA, under Regulation Crowdfunding.

The story behind it

A restaurant owner in Silver Spring wanted to buy the building he had leased for eleven years. His bank wanted a personal guarantee. The equity investors wanted control and an exit in five. He took neither. An out-of-state buyer got the building, and his rent went up the next year.

Why

A community operator gets two shapes of capital. He can take debt and guarantee it personally, or equity that takes control and wants an exit in five years. Neither one works for a man who intends to still be there in twenty. Caravan is the third shape.

Who

Community operators raising capital, and investors who want money inside a real operating business. Registered as a funding portal, so ordinary investors can participate under Reg CF.

What

A marketplace running on a registered portal. Issuers clear a written list of hard stops before they list, and the terms get published before anyone commits.

Freedom Fund

Freedom Fund

Pay off the loan. Keep the business.

Forming
caravanfunds.com ↗

The fund buys part of a U.S. small business or a family's home, and that money pays off the bank loan or the mortgage. The interest stops. A Rule 506(c) fund run by Caravan Capital, for verified accredited investors.

The story behind it

A neighborhood coffee shop carries a $200,000 bank loan. The interest is due every month, in a slow month too. The owner works for the lender first and for himself second.

Why

A loan charges interest whether the month was good or bad. A share does not. The fund earns its part of the profit only when there is profit.

Who

U.S. small-business owners and families paying interest on a loan, and verified accredited investors who want to own a share of businesses and homes near them.

What

The fund pays the lender directly and owns its share from that day. A business pays the fund its share of profit. A family pays rent on the fund's share only. Either one buys the share back over time. Caravan Capital is the general partner. Nothing here is an offer.

From A.I. to E.I.

Open source · MIT
Open the framework

An open framework of nine questions for anything that gets built: an A.I. system, a team, a business. Free to use, change and build on under the MIT License.

The story behind it

Venture capital put $400 million into Bored Ape projects. In those same months, social enterprises in Bangladesh and Africa asked us where to find ten thousand dollars. E.I. began as the questions we started asking after that year.

Why

A.I. makes almost anything cheaper to build. It does not say whether the thing should exist, or who pays when it goes wrong. A guardrail written after launch arrives too late.

Who

Builders, product teams, founders and the people who govern A.I. systems. Anyone who has to check a decision before it ships.

What

Ethical, Empathy and Ecosystem down the side. Impact, Innovation and Investment across the top. A question where each pair meets, each with a paper, measures and three public cases.

The founder holds these ventures today, and bringing them under CEI is planned rather than done. Descriptions are as represented by management and are subject to diligence.
